LITHOPON

 In About Chemicals

Lithopone is a pigment composed of a mixture of barium sulfate (BaSO4) and zinc sulfide (ZnS). It was historically used as a white pigment due to its good hiding power and brightness. While it has been largely replaced by titanium dioxide in many applications due to titanium dioxide’s superior whiteness and covering power, lithopone still finds use in various industries because of its cost-effectiveness and specific properties.

CHARACTETRISTICS

  • It is a white metallic color which is obtained by the amalgamation of following metals
  • Zinc sulfate, barium sulfate, zinc oxide

Lithopone uses

  1. Paints and Coatings
  • White Pigment: Lithopone is used as a white pigment in the manufacture of various types of paints and coatings. It is appreciated for its ability to provide a bright white color and good opacity at a lower cost than some other white pigments.
  • Base for Colored Paints: Due to its neutral color, lithopone serves as an excellent base for creating light and pastel shades when mixed with colored pigments.
  1. Plastics Industry
  • Coloring Agent: In the plastics industry, lithopone is used to color plastic products. It helps in achieving a bright white appearance and can also be mixed with other pigments to produce various shades.
  • Filler: Beyond its use as a pigment, lithopone acts as a filler in plastics, contributing to the reduction of production costs and improving the mechanical properties of plastic products.
  1. Paper Production
  • Whitening Agent: Lithopone is used in the paper industry as a whitening agent to increase the brightness and opacity of paper. It is especially useful in papers where a high degree of whiteness is required.
  1. Rubber Products
  • Filler and Colorant: In the rubber industry, lithopone serves both as a filler to reduce costs and enhance certain properties of rubber compounds, and as a colorant for white or light-colored rubber products.
  1. Ink Manufacturing
  • Pigment for Inks: Lithopone is used in the production of inks, including those for printing and writing, due to its opacity and bright white color. It helps in producing inks that are vivid, durable, and resistant to fading.
  • Paint making, rubber making formulas, rubber belts manufacturing, synthetic leather making, ring rollers, rubber pencil erasers manufacturing.
