Description

Carburizing salt bath, also known as non-cyanide salt bath carburizing, is a heat treatment process used to introduce carbon into the surface of steel parts to increase hardness and wear resistance. Unlike cyanide-based salt bath carburizing, which uses cyanide compounds for carbon diffusion, Carburizing Salt Bath non cyaniding  utilize alternative carbon-rich compounds to achieve the desired effect.

Non-cyanide salt bath carburizing process

  1. Part Preparation: The steel parts to be carburized are thoroughly cleaned to remove any contaminants such as oil, grease, or scale. Proper cleaning is crucial for effective carburizing.
  2. Salt Bath Preparation: A specialized furnace or salt bath equipment is used to heat the non-cyanide salt bath to the desired temperature. The specific temperature and composition of the salt bath will depend on the material being treated and the desired carburizing depth.
  3. Immersion: The pre-cleaned parts are carefully immersed into the molten salt bath. The parts should be fully submerged and not in contact with each other to ensure uniform carburizing.
  4. Soaking: The parts are soaked in the salt bath for a specific duration, typically ranging from several minutes to several hours. This soaking time allows the carbon-rich compounds in the salt bath to diffuse into the surface of the parts, forming a carbon-enriched layer.
  5. Carbon Diffusion: The heat and carbon-rich environment in the salt bath facilitate the diffusion of carbon atoms into the surface of the parts. This process creates a hardened and carbon-rich layer, commonly known as a “case,” which increases the surface hardness and wear resistance of the treated parts.
  6. Quenching: After the desired time, the parts are typically removed from the bath and rapidly quenched in a suitable medium, such as oil or water, to cool them down. Quenching helps to stabilize the carburized layer and achieve the desired hardness.
  7. Post-Treatment: Depending on the specific requirements and material, additional processes such as tempering, stress relieving, or machining may be performed to achieve the desired final properties and dimensions.

Carburizing process in Heat treatment

Non-cyanide salt bath carburizing is commonly used for steels that require improved wear resistance, such as gears, bearings, and other high-wear components. The process offers advantages such as reduced environmental concerns compared to cyanide-based carburizing methods.

It is essential to note that non-cyanide salt bath carburizing is a specialized process that requires specific equipment, expertise, and adherence to safety protocols. Working with molten salts can be hazardous, and proper precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of the equipment. Therefore, it is recommended to consult with experienced heat treatment professionals or service providers for the proper implementation of non-cyanide salt bath carburizing for specific materials and applications.

As the Price of Sodium Cyanide is much higher now therefore using this formula which is composed of without cyanide addition. The Hardness and case are also built in less time  and this formula works from 800 C to 950 C .

For all steel grades low carbon MS and Die steel material easily gain the hardness.
